Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $260 – $480 installed, depending on which Gelco model you have and whether we’re swapping the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the full frame. We stock Gelco-compatible damper parts on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: the handle won’t close all the way, smoke backs into the living room on windy days, or cold air pours down the chimney in January when the AC is doing the heavy lifting.
Hank Delano has seen failed Gelco dampers in every kind of home Fort Lauderdale throws at a chimney crew, from 1950s ranch houses in Riverside Park to newer construction west of I-95. The failure pattern is predictable once you understand what South Florida humidity does to metal parts.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco dampers fall into two broad families: the older cast-iron throat dampers with a poker-style handle, and the newer top-sealing or Lyemance-style dampers that fit the crown of the chimney. The quickest way to identify yours is to look at the handle in the firebox. A handle that swings side to side is a throat damper. A cable that pulls down from the top of the firebox opening is a top-sealing unit.
The compatibility gotcha most owners hit is this: Gelco throat dampers are sized by the internal flue dimension, not the firebox opening, and getting that measurement wrong means the damper plate won’t seat properly no matter how well you install it. We measure the flue at the point where the damper frame mounts, usually 6 to 12 inches above the firebox. If you see a part number stamped on the existing damper frame, that helps, but South Florida corrosion usually makes it unreadable after 15 years.
The OEM versus aftermarket decision on Gelco damper parts is simpler than most owners expect. Genuine Gelco damper plates and frames are still available for most models, and we use them when the chimney flue is a standard size. For non-standard flue dimensions, a quality aftermarket cast-iron damper plate cut to fit is often the better option, because the metal thickness and hinge pin design match or exceed the original. We tell you which route we’re taking and why, before the work starts.
One note on the trade: Flint Chimney Co Fort Lauderdale is an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with Gelco. We stock and install Gelco-compatible parts because they’re dependable, but our guarantee comes from us, not the manufacturer.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Handle spins without resistance. The hinge pin has snapped or the cotter pin that locks the damper plate to the handle shaft has rusted through. In Fort Lauderdale’s salt air, this is usually corrosion, not wear.
- Smoke backs into the room on windy days. The damper plate is no longer sealing evenly because the frame has warped or the plate edge has rusted into a jagged gap. Even a quarter-inch gap lets a lot of smoke back through.
- Cold draft in the living room, even with the damper closed. A damper that won’t fully shut lets conditioned air escape up the flue. In a Fort Lauderdale summer, that means your AC runs harder than it should.
- Water streaks or rust below the damper. This points to a damper that’s jammed partially open, allowing rain to reach the firebox instead of evaporating in the flue.
- Loud metallic thunk when you close it. That’s the damper plate hitting a warped or debris-clogged frame instead of seating cleanly. Continued use just accelerates the wear.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco damper plate replacement in Fort Lauderdale runs $260 – $340 installed. A full damper frame and plate replacement runs $380 – $480. The range comes down to two things: how much of the existing frame is salvageable, and whether the flue size is standard or requires a custom-cut plate.
Every quote we give is written before any work starts. That written price covers the part, the labor, a flue inspection while we’re in there, and a full-year written guarantee on the repair. If the repair fails within that year, we come back at no charge. No invoice surprises, no “while we were up there we noticed” additions after the fact.
DIY or Call Us?
Some damper issues are checkable from the ground. You can shine a flashlight up into the firebox and look for obvious rust, a disconnected handle, or debris blocking the damper plate. What you shouldn’t do is start pulling damper frames or swinging plates out of a seated chimney. A cast-iron damper plate is heavy, and reaching into a firebox to wrestle one loose puts your hands directly under falling metal. A dropped plate can break fingers or crack firebrick.
If you’ve checked the handle and can confirm it’s not a simple debris issue, call the pro. Replacing a Gelco damper properly means half the work happens at the crown of the chimney, and that’s ladder or roof work in Fort Lauderdale heat. Not a job for a Saturday afternoon. Give us a call at (754) 354-1430, and we’ll give you a written price before anyone picks up a tool.
FAQs
A Gelco damper in South Florida typically lasts 12 to 18 years, though salt air near the coast can shorten that to 10 years and a well-maintained damper inland can push past 20. The hinge pin and the plate edge are the first things to go.
A damper plate with a snapped hinge pin or minor surface rust can often be repaired by replacing the pin or re-seating the plate. A plate that’s rusted through, warped, or missing metal along the seating edge needs replacement. We’ll show you which one you’re dealing with before you decide.
A straightforward damper plate swap takes about an hour to an hour and a half. A full frame and plate replacement runs two to three hours. Most jobs are completed the same day we arrive.
We stock common Gelco damper plates, hinge pins, and replacement handles on our trucks, plus DuraFlex and HeatShield components for other chimney repairs. If we need a rare size, we bring it on the return visit and the price was already set in writing on day one.
