Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
Gelco chimney cap installation in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $285 to $540 installed, depending on the cap size, flue type, and whether the old cap has corroded to the crown. We stock Gelco caps in the most common sizes on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. Most owners discover the cap has failed when they hear rain spatter inside the firebox during a storm, or when a rust-colored stain shows up on the crown. In Fort Lauderdale, salt air eats galvanized caps faster than anywhere else in the state, so you may be on your second or third cap if the home is older than 15 years.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
This guide covers the full Gelco chimney cap line we commonly install in Fort Lauderdale homes: the standard cap with 3/4-inch mesh for spark protection, the heavy-duty model for high-wind zones, and the full-coverage cap that includes corner mounting brackets for larger flues. The compatibility gotcha people miss: Gelco caps are sized by the flue tile’s outside dimension, not the inside opening. You can’t measure the hole and order a cap. The cap has to slip over the flue tile with about a half-inch of clearance, so an 8×8 flue tile usually takes an 8.5×8.5 or 9×9 cap depending on how thick the tile is.
If the old cap still has its label, the series number is stamped on the underside of the lid or on the mesh band. If it’s gone, we measure the flue crown and tile outer dimensions on-site and match it. We install Gelco caps as a direct fit replacement, and we also work with aftermarket equivalents where the specs match and the material grade is equal. For Fort Lauderdale specifically, we recommend stainless steel over galvanized every time, because the salt in the air near the coast cuts a galvanized cap’s life down to four or five years.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust staining on the chimney crown. A cheap galvanized cap sheds rust that runs down the masonry and leaves brown streaks. The cap is failing, not the chimney, but the stain still needs a proper cleaning once the cap is replaced.
- Rain water dripping into the firebox. The cap’s lid has corroded through or the mounting brackets have failed. Water in the firebox is the clearest sign the cap is no longer doing its job.
- Birds or animal sounds in the flue. The mesh has torn or the corner mounts have pulled loose, leaving a gap. We find squirrel nests in Fort Lauderdale flues every spring when the caps were old enough for the mesh to rust through.
- Visible corrosion or holes in the mesh. Once the mesh fails, sparks can escape and the cap is no longer code-compliant for fire protection, aside from letting critters in.
- A draft smell getting worse in humid months. A failed cap lets humid air sit in the flue, and in Fort Lauderdale that means baked-in creosote smells get drawn back into the house during the summer when the chimney sits idle.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Fort Lauderdale runs $285 to $540 installed. The spread comes from three things: the cap size, whether it’s stainless or galvanized, and whether the existing crown has damage that needs a repair before the new cap mounts cleanly. If the crown has cracks or spalling, we recommend addressing that first, because a new cap sitting on a crumbling crown won’t seat properly.
The price includes the cap itself, the mounting hardware, installation labor, and a written guarantee valid for one full year on the work under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. You’ll see the price in writing before any work starts, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice. No added charges at the end.
One honest note: if your old Gelco cap is still holding but the mesh is torn, we’ll tell you. Sometimes a mesh repair is more cost-effective than a full cap replacement. Other times the cap is too far gone. Either way, you’ll know what we found and what it costs before we pick up a tool.
DIY or Call Us?
This one is a call-us job. Getting onto a roof in Fort Lauderdale means dealing with heat, wind, and often a barrel-tile roof that doesn’t take a ladder well. We use proper fall protection and know how to move on tile without breaking the tiles. A wrong-sized cap means the flue isn’t protected and you’ve paid for a part you can’t return after it’s been mounted.
What you can safely do is look up from the ground with binoculars and note the condition of the cap: rust, missing mesh, or a lid that looks tilted. That gives us a starting point when you call (754) 354-1430. Most Gelco cap replacements take about an hour once we’re on the roof, and we leave the crown and the roof clean.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap in Fort Lauderdale typically lasts 10 to 15 years, while a galvanized cap will start failing in four to six years due to salt air and humidity. Stainless costs more up front but avoids a second scaffold charge later. Call (754) 354-1430 and we can tell you what’s currently on your flue.
If only the mesh is torn and the lid and brackets are structurally sound, mesh repair can work in some cases. But if the lid is rusted through or the corner mounts have pulled loose, replacement is cheaper and safer than trying to patch a part that’s already failing. We’ll photograph what we find so you can see it before deciding.
Most Gelco cap installations in Fort Lauderdale are done in about one hour on-site. If we need to repair the crown first, that adds time, and we’ll tell you before we start. We carry the common cap sizes on the truck, so there’s usually no need for a second trip.
We stock the most common Gelco cap sizes on the truck and the hardware to mount them. We also keep a supply of aftermarket equivalents in stainless and galvanized that match the Gelco specs. If your flue is an unusual size, we order the exact cap and schedule the install once it arrives, usually within a few days. Flint Chimney Co Fort Lauderdale is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we work with Gelco parts daily alongside DuraFlex and HeatShield products.
