Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
A DuraFlex chimney cap replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $285 to $520 installed, including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. We stock two common cap profiles on the truck and can usually complete the swap in under an hour. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: they spot rust streaks on the chimney chase, hear a loose cap rattling during afternoon storms, or a neighbor points out that the cap looks tilted from the street.
If you have a DuraFlex liner system, the cap does more than keep rain out. It anchors the top of the liner, protects the termination point, and keeps birds and debris from dropping into the flue. When it fails, water gets between the liner and the masonry, and that is where the expensive damage starts.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex is a brand under DuraVent, and their chimney caps come in two main profiles we see across Fort Lauderdale: the round top-termination cap used on flexible liner systems, and the flat chase cover with a round collar that fits over factory-built chimney chases. If your liner is DuraFlex 304 stainless or DuraFlex Pro, the round cap threads or clamps directly onto the liner top. The flat chase cover style is more common on the single-story ranch homes and older bungalows west of US-1, where the original builder capped the chase with a galvanized cover that rusts through in a decade or less.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: the round caps are not universal. DuraFlex liners come in 4-inch through 8-inch inner diameters, and the cap collar must match the liner diameter exactly. A 6-inch cap on a 6-inch liner works. A 6-inch cap on a 5.5-inch liner leaks. That is the single most common mistake we find after a homeowner or a handyman attempts the swap. If you cannot find the diameter stamped on the liner edge, we measure on site with a caliper before ordering or pulling anything off the roof.
We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex or DuraVent. We use their caps because we trust the fit and the stainless grade they specify for South Florida exposure. We also work with HeatShield and Gelco products where those are the better match for the existing system.
How to identify what you have: look for a foil label on the liner near the fireplace or in the attic chase, which usually shows the brand and diameter. If that is gone, the cap itself often has a stamped part number on the underside rim.
OEM vs aftermarket: for DuraFlex-specific needs, we use OEM DuraFlex caps. For generic chase covers, we often use a 304 stainless fabricated cover from a local metal shop, which outlasts anything galvanized by a wide margin in this salt air. The decision gets made on the roof, with a photo sent to you before we bolt anything down.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the chimney or siding below the cap. The cap is no longer shedding water. In Fort Lauderdale, that is often a galvanized cap that has reached the end of its life, especially within three miles of the ocean. The metal thins and then pinholes form, and every rain pushes water into the chase top.
- A cap that shifts or rattles when the wind picks up. That means the mounting hardware has pulled loose from the masonry or the liner collar has a widened gap. August storms will keep working it until it lifts off completely.
- Debris or nesting material visible at the cap edges or in the firebox. Birds and squirrels exploit any opening. A missing or warped cap top is an open invitation, and the nest itself becomes a fire hazard at the top of the flue.
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the chimney chase. This is the late-stage symptom. The cap has been leaking for months, and the water has traveled inside the chase to the drywall or framing below. By the time you see the stain, the repair is no longer just a cap.
- You cannot see the cap rise when you look at the chimney from the ground, or it looks tilted. A cap should sit level and square. If it is cocked, the liner top may have shifted, or the chase cover itself is bowing under years of heat and moisture.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A round DuraFlex cap replacement in Fort Lauderdale runs $285 to $395 installed, depending on diameter and whether the liner top needs a new clamp or adapter. A flat chase cover with a round collar runs $420 to $520 for a standard footprint, more if a custom fabrication is needed for an odd-size chase. That is the cost before the chimney has any structural issue beyond the cap itself.
Every quote is a written price before any work starts, and the number on the invoice is the number you approved. The price includes the cap, mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old part, and a camera check of the upper flue so you can see what is going on below the cap while we are up there. All work carries a written guarantee valid for one full year. If the cap fails or shifts within that year, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can do safely from the ground: look for visible rust, a tilted cap, or light showing through gaps. That is enough to confirm the cap has failed. What you should not do is climb onto a Fort Lauderdale roof in July, stand at the chimney edge, and try to loosen a corroded cap. Roof work around a chimney is a genuine fall risk, and the cap is often under tension from a liner that has shifted. We use proper tie-off equipment and a spotter on every roof job.
If you already bought a DuraFlex cap and it does not fit, we will install your part if it is in usable condition and matches the liner diameter, or we will show you why it will not work before any money changes hands. Call (754) 354-1430 for a written quote.
FAQs
A DuraFlex 304 stainless cap in Fort Lauderdale typically lasts 12 to 18 years before the top screen or mounting collar shows meaningful corrosion. Galvanized caps, which many original installs still have, rust through in 8 to 12 years in this salt-heavy air, and often faster within a few miles of the coast. If your cap is galvanized and more than ten years old, replacement is the fix, not repair.
Sometimes, and it depends on what failed. A loose clamp or a torn screen can be repaired with new hardware. A rusted-through cap body or a warped chase cover cannot, and trying to patch it simply moves water to the next seam. We will show you a photo of the actual damage and give you both options with written prices before anything gets ordered. Call (754) 354-1430 and we will schedule the roof check.
Most DuraFlex cap swaps in Fort Lauderdale take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder-up to ladder-down, assuming the liner top and chase are in intact condition. If we find damage below the cap, like a cracked crown or a shifted liner, we will show you the camera footage and give you a written price for the additional work before extending the job.
We carry 6-inch and 7-inch round DuraFlex caps and two common chase cover sizes on the truck. Odd sizes and custom chase covers are ordered and usually installed within three to five business days. You will know the timeline before the first visit is over.
